Focussing on Research for your Music Magazine

Main Task for the next two Weeks
Explore Music magazines
Research (Label)
Our Research will support our work for the Evaluation questions that we complete next term
Task One 
Completed by (Thursday lesson)
Post the following
List and download (Cover Images) as many Music Magazines as you can find. Use Google/Images. 

Find out the following information about the magazines and provide individual blogs about the following

Task 2
Do they belong to any specific genre regarding Target Audience and musical Tastes


  1. Heavy Metal 
  2. Pop 
  3. Rock’n’Roll 
  4. Multi Genre (All tastes) 
  5. Hip Hop 
  6. Rap etc
Task 3
Do any of these Music genres interest You (Provide a post explain why you might be interested.)

Task 4
Choose as least 3 possible style models ( Real Magazines of your Choice)
How much does the magazine cost?
How regularly are the magazines published?
How many issues have been printed

Task 5
Find out about the company (Instituation)  that creates these magazines.
Are they from big Institutions e.g. EMAP. Bauer Media etc or Smaller publishers?
Can you find any distribution figures for each magazine (Number of people who read it

Task 6
Who is the audience for this magazines

Task 7
Who are the bands/Artists who feature each Magazine. Are they Local - National - Global stars

Next Step
After completing the tasks we will focus on the Conventions of a Music magazine

Pre-Lim work - Deadlines for 23rd October

This week:

All students have begun the process of Manipulating their Original images for their pre-liminary task.

Top tips
Refer to earlier post to check that you understand the brief for the Pre-lim brief:

"Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program."

Use the Screen Shoot (ref picture below)
Shift Command & 4 to get a precise Screen Shot for your work to upload onto your posts. 



We are going to prepare your pre-lim initially using Photoshop (image manipulation Software) to 
develop your confidence using ADOBE programmes.

To Achieve a A-C grade for the Oct 23rd Assessment cycle you must demonstrate the following on your Blog posts:
Main Cover


  1. Ability to take Appropriate Shots (MCU with appropriate Mise en Scene particularly Costume, Props, Location & a clear Image narrative'
  2. Masthead with Appropriate Colour palette (School colours( Font & Font size 
  3. Appropriate Additional Text reflecting the life of a School /Academy

Contents Page 


  1. Appropriate text: Font (same as Cover); Size of Font (Different); Colour (Same colour palette as cover).
  2. At least one additional image (Any Camera Angle/Composition)
  3. Contents conventions ( Draft pressentation)


Technical Skills

Appropriate use of ADOBE tools including use of:

  1. Layers
  2. Layer from Background (if necessary)
  3. Paint Bucket tool 
  4. Text Tool & Sizing
  5. Eraser Tool (Advanced Magic Wand)
  6. Blending Options (Right click Text layer)
  7. Open all in Windows to Move Image to Set Canvas size
  8. Canvas size - Portrait A4 x 2 (42cm width 59.8cm height)

Blogs
  • At least 15 posts on your Blog - showing the work process you have completed - culminating in the completed Pre-lim tasks. USE the Screen capture to add images of your work on ADOBE.

Future Planning


  • We will be working on a DTP programme In Design after half term for our main task.(The Music Magazine)
  • Acquaint yourself with the programme in Study time H/W using YouTube tutorials.

Examples of Written drafts to support your Pre Lim Photshoot

Consider

  1. Who?
  2. Where?
  3. What are you telling the Audience about the School (Symbols & Codes)?
  4. Have you sort permissions (Actors & Location)? (I will give you a copy of this in Tuesday's lesson)
  5. Remember our Analysis of Shot Composition (Ref: Rule of Thirds)

Assessment for Tomorrow

Mr Natton and I will be completing and entering your first assessment grades tomorrow morning at 7.15. (This allows maximum time for you all to complete your assessment tasks.

  1. I will be giving you a A-E A level grade to reflect your work with me. Please make sure that you have given me your blogger address by the end of the lesson as I will be accessing your Blogs to grade your work. n.b. All 4 Posts must be in place
  2. Mr Natton & I will be assessing your 1-4 grade for your commitment to work in theory & coursework lessons this term. Please make sure all H/W has been handed in to Mr Natton as a failure to do so will result in 3/4 grade which will have implications on future Bursary awards. Any doubts please see Mr Natton before the end of the day

  • Time Management: Photos to be completed by next Thursdays lessons. Camera's will be available from Today's lesson for small groups to plan.


You must:

  • Provide a Hand Drawn rough draft of your Front Cover (I will scan this to upload onto your blog)
  • Take suitable pictures referring to the Mis en Scene on Blog 3 and include additional pics for Contents draft.


  • Once completed we will select the most suitable images for your Pre-lim take & blog the selection process.
  • Once selected we will use ADOBE photoshop to manipulate the images
