Evaluation 6 & 7

Question 6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
The question about technologies allows you to bring together your understanding of software, hardware and online tools and how they might all interact in your project.
Use of Photoshop/Social Media/ Software programmes/ Digital Camera’s/ Examples of using Software to Edit/ Blogger/ Feedback via Social Media/ Internet Search engines for Research into Style Models Etc

Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

This can be very reflective in relation to your own skills development and like several of the other tasks can be used to build up evidence towards the A2 exam, where for question 1a you are asked about your development across the course.

Evaluation 4

Questions 4 and 5 look at the audience from slightly different perspectives.

A simple way to approach Question 4, which you can build in to your research early on, is to do

what the media industries do and profile a typical audience member. Here is an image of the ideal viewer for  an AS Media Studies student who has chosen film for her c/w  and her description of her likely tastes. The selection for a Music magazine WOULD FOLLOW THIS PATTERN TOO!

E.G.
  • This is EVE Goodwin. She is 15 years and 7 months old, (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT AGE FOR YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE) and lives in the suburbs of Liverpool.

  • She dresses fairly straight forwardly - just jeans and a top. (THIS IS DULL - BE MORE DESCRIPTIVE)

  • She enjoys sleepovers with her friends, and shopping at the weekends with her pocket money. (Make Activities for your Target Audience Age Appropriate)

  • She shops in places like H&M and River Island, Jane Norman, New Look, and Topshop.

  • She enjoys films like Mean Girls, Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging, House Bunny, St Trinians, Sex and the City, Momma Mia,(UPDATE)  she enjoys watching them at the cinema and also buying them later on DVD (NETFLIX - STREAMING  be Specific etc) and watching them with her friends, and jelly and ice cream.

  • A SECTION ON SOCIAL MEDIA NEEDS TO ADDED HERE. Bring the AUDIENCE into a 2017 world. How would Girl/boy in your target Audience access the Internet & Social Media and What would they view?

  • They would watch Hollyoaks, Friends, Scrubs, Family Guy, X Factor, America's Next Top Model, One Tree Hill. (REALITY SHOWS etc)

  • The main channels would be Channel 4; E4; Living Tv; ITV; BBC Three; Comedy Central.

  • The music this girl would listen to would be anything in the charts, varying from pop, hiphop. r 'n' b, indie music - not really a 'rock' or 'classical' or 'dub-step'. Listens to Kiss FM and Radio 1 for the 'chart hits’.

  • I think our film would appeal to this girl as she is a stereotypical girly girl who enjoys typical girly things, therefore, if this film was shown at her local cinema, this may appeal to her, as it's similar to other films she likes, such as Mean Girls, House Bunny, and Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging and St Trinians.”

UPDATE  (2017 REFERENCES) THE FILMS/MUSIC/TV  RADIO SHOWS/ LEISURE ACTIVITIES/ SPENDING PATTERNS TO REFLECT A PROFILE THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MUSIC MAGAZINE.

Although this refers to Film C/W - The framework is similar for a music magazine.

Evaluation 3

Question 3:What kind of magazine institution might distribute your music magazine.

I have edited an exemplar answer for you. (This is for guidance only)
Please pay particular attention to the red text I have highlighted for you.
What is an institution?
An media institution is an (often profit based) establishment that is in charge of distributing, marketing and producing different media products.• For example Development Hell. Distributes Mixmag and Bauer distributes Kerrang and Mojo.

Who distributes the existing product you researched? (USE YOUR STYLE MODEL)
DJ Mag is a English magazine, producing one copy a month and is dedicated to electronic dance music. The first issue was in 1991, and since June 2010 it has started to be translated to other languages, such as Italian and Portuguese. The magazine is edited by Ben Murphy and has recently started to be distributed byThrust Publishing. Before that it distributed itself under ‘DJ mag publishing’, while things were still small and low scale.

Other big magazine distributing institutes…
IPC Media • IPC Media is a consumer magazine and a digital publisher founded in 1958 in the United Kingdom, it has a large portfolio and sells over 350 million copies each year. It supplies magazines and newspapers such as NME, Look, TV Times, Pick Me Up and Marie Claire. • www.ipcmedia.com • Bauer Media • “Bauer Media is a division of the Bauer Media Group, Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations.” It distributes magazines such as Kerrang! Q Closer, Grazia and Heat. www.bauermedia.co.uk (UPDATE AND CHECK THESE STATS)

What company would I like to distribute my magazine and why?
I would like Bauer to distribute my magazine because they currently don’t distribute any electronic dance music magazines, only rock and pop.• Also I think they would have better distribution to reach my media product to a mass market rather than small scale audiences like the existing electronic dance music magazines do (e.g. DJ mag and ATM). I believe there is a gap in the magazine industry for a popular dance magazine as at the moment most popular music magazines are rock or pop.• They would also have a bigger budget to play with and therefore be able to attract more people with add-ons such as good competitions, giveaways and big artists.
Also most of Bauer’s magazines (such as Q) are not only magazines they also have their own website, radio and television channel. Which would be a great advantage for my magazine, as it would mean I would be able to address more possible consumers. (such as people who would not originally buy the magazine but happened to listen to the radio station and enjoy it, then buy the magazine.)

Extending my media product into different areas…

(KEY AREA - Reference other PLATFORMS such as TWITTER _ FACEBOOK_ INSTAGAM- ALSO MUSIC CHANNELS TO PROMOTE YOUR MUSIC) I think as a dance music magazine, I would like my magazine and logo to extend, first of all to a slot on radio 1 on a Friday night. Then once I have my product established create a ‘WIRED fm’.• I would also infiltrate my product to festivals, have a WIRED stage at Cream Fields and Global Gathering, also sponsor dance music festivals such as Tomorrow Land.• By doing this I would enable my product to catch the attention of more possible consumers. For example with 200,000 people attending Tomorrow Land they would see that it was sponsored by ‘WIRED’ and be inclined to buy it afterwards. Therefore bringing my product to more and more people, gaining more revenue and extending the content.

Evaluation 2

All this information is in the booklet hared to you on Wednesday 19th April.

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Question 2 at AS asks about how social groups are represented.
A good way of expressing this is to do a bit of comparison between the way you have represented a YOUR COVER MODEL  and how mainstream media has done it.

So for example, if you are doing the magazine task, you might set a screengrab from your work alongside one from a real MUSIC magazine, as in this example:
"The postures of both men are similar in the sense that they’ve both got their hands in their pockets. They also share similar facial expressions – both serious and staring straight at the camera, although Andrew’s eyes are hidden by his aviator sunglasses. (Important :What does the costume/look say to the TARGET Audience about the Model and the  the Music he represents?

In addition to this, both men are wearing similar costumes – jeans and a t-shirt layered with a shirt on top. As well as this, the background setting is very similar – both pictures were taken outside on a field with trees in the distance. However, the lighting used in the photos is different with one displaying a much brighter blue sky and the other a more overcast grey outlook.

Also, they have different hairstyles – Andrew’s is longer, darker and covering his face more, whereas the man from in the Magazine has shorter, lighter gelled up hair. (SAY WHY STYLE/CLOTHING etc ATTRACTS YOUR AUDIENCE)

Overall I think that these elements of the photos represent a normal young social group and that my magazine reflects this throughout – the people featured in my magazine are quite normal looking – there’s nothing extreme or obscure about their appearances.” (Does your Magazine reflect/represent a particular group?)
